Apple's much-anticipated foray into the next-generation smart home market is facing significant delays. While the company's new AI push heavily features a rumored Home Hub, the timing of its release is shifting. A robotic arm accessory for the Home Hub, which may feature a tablet device upgraded with AI, isn't expected to launch until 2027 or 2028. The primary culprit behind these setbacks appears to be Siri's development, as rumors suggest that bugs within the new Siri update are delaying the release of these products.

Currently, Apple's hardware lineup struggles to keep up with its artificial intelligence ambitions. The existing HomePod mini relies on the S5 chip originally introduced with the Apple Watch Series 5. Similarly, the 2nd-generation HomePod utilizes the S7 chip from the Apple Watch Series 7. These processors were never designed to handle modern AI workloads. Despite the delays to the robotic arm, updates to the Apple TV and HomePod mini could still arrive in 2026.

Matter 1.6 Streamlines Device Connections

While some hardware is delayed, the software ecosystems connecting our homes are advancing rapidly. The Connectivity Standard Alliance recently announced the release of Matter 1.6. This standard aims to improve compatibility across major platforms like Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa.

A major focus of Matter 1.6 is ease of use. The update introduces NFC-based commissioning, allowing users to pair a compatible product simply by holding their phone near it, bypassing the need to scan QR codes. Furthermore, the update makes it easier to switch smart devices between different platforms.

The standard also introduces "Thermostat Suggestions," a framework that helps smart thermostats prioritize competing instructions, such as choosing between a user's scheduled temperature change and a utility's energy-management program. It can even distinguish between automated software changes and manual adjustments made by the user, giving priority to the manual inputs. Additionally, smart security sensors can now store event histories, making it easier for users to track when sensors were activated through platforms like Google Home.
